Firstly we should emphasise that we do not set any cookies on your computer for our own use. Cookies might however be set by third parties such as google analytics and google adsense to help enhance your experience and to help us to offer a better service to future visitors. Furthermore these cookies do not identify you personally, they simply record how long ‘a visitor’ spent on a particular page or on the site, or how often visitors come back to thes site a second time for example.
Individually this information is not useful but when looked at together it is very useful to us eg if we can see over a period of time that visitors spend twice as long reading page X compared with page Y we can look to see what improvements we can make to page Y. As we said, this is to improve the overall visitor experience and has no connection with you personally.
We explain below how you can control these cookies from being set
What Are Cookies
For more general information on cookies see the Wikipedia article on HTTP Cookies…
How Cookies are used
Unfortunately in most cases there are no industry standard options for disabling cookies without completely disabling the functionality and features they add to this site. It is recommended that you leave on all cookies if you are not sure whether you need them or not in case they are used to provide a service that you use.
You can prevent the setting of cookies by adjusting the settings on your browser (see your browser Help for how to do this). Be aware that disabling cookies will affect the functionality of this and many other websites that you visit. Disabling cookies will usually result in also disabling certain functionality and features of the this site. Therefore it is recommended that you do not disable cookies.
The Cookies We Set
As already mentioned we do not set cookies unless you are registered with us.
Third Party Cookies
This site uses Google Analytics which is one of the most widespread and trusted analytics solution on the web for helping us to understand how you use the site and ways that we can improve your experience. These cookies may track things such as how long you spend on the site and the pages that you visit so we can continue to produce engaging content.
For more information on Google Analytics cookies, see the official Google Analytics page.
The Google AdSense service we use to serve advertising uses a DoubleClick cookie to serve more relevant ads across the web and limit the number of times that a given ad is shown to you.
For more information on Google AdSense see the official Google AdSense privacy FAQ.
Hopefully that has clarified things for you and as was previously mentioned if there is something that you aren’t sure whether you need or not it’s usually safer to leave cookies enabled in case it does interact with one of the features you use on our site. However if you are still looking for more information then you can contact us:
Log Files: Like many other websites we make use of log files. The information inside the log files includes internet protocol ( IP ) addresses, type of browser, Internet Service Provider ( ISP ), date/time stamp, referring/exit pages, and number of clicks to analyze trends, administer the site, track user’s movement around the site, and gather demographic information.
IP addresses, and other such information are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable. We keep no personal information about our visitors and have no access to personal information about our visitors.
The only exception to this is where visitors choose to register on our site eg to receive newsletters or to share information with our community. In these circumstances we can assure you that under no circumstances will this information (typically just name and email address) be given to or sold to any third party or misused by us in any way.
